Ste. Rose School Supports Humboldt Broncos
After the tragic accident involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, student teacher Nathan Zadorozny felt he needed to do something. His initial goal was to have students raise $500 by April 13, and in turn, he would shave his head. The $500 was raised the very next day. Other teachers stepped up and raised the bar; teacher Jenn Bryan would dye her hair green at $1,000, teacher Nghiem Le would dye his hair blonde at $1,500, and retired teacher Marcel Morin would shave his head at $2,000. At $2,500 principal Rhonda Buchanan and resource teacher Shari Shankaruk would color their hair green and Marcel Morin would also shave his signature mustache.
It was overwhelming how quickly donations came in. Students, staff, and community members all wanted to do something. Some students chose to go door to door, some gave their birthday money, while others emptied their piggy banks. On April 13 just over $2,500.00 was raised.
K-12 students were invited on Monday, April 16 at 2:00 to watch students shave their teachers’ heads and moustaches, and observe their teachers’ new hair colors.
This tragedy has hit home for everyone. Ste. Rose is a small hockey town and has had many students play in the Junior Hockey League. In times of tragedy, it is comforting to see how quickly people come together.
